Release Day Book Blitz : Kissing Frogs by Alisha Sevigny

Kissing Frogs
Release Date: 11/18/14
Swoon Romance

Summary from Goodreads:
Popular party girl and high school senior Jessica Scott has a secret: she used to be a nerd — a big one; a goody two-shoes, grade-skipping, all-state spelling bee champ. But she lost the braces, put on some contacts, and applied all her academic genius to studying and imitating the social elite. Now she rules the school from the upper echelon of the high school realm. With her cool new friends and hottest-guy-in-school boyfriend, life’s a beach — and that’s where she’s headed for Spring Break. That is, until her teacher breaks the bad news that she’s failing Biology — and her only chance to make up the grade is to throw away the culminating trip of her hard-earned popularity and join the Conservation Club in Panama to save the Golden Frog.

Unable to let go of her faded college dreams, Jess finds herself in a foreign country with a new social crew, and one handsome face that stands out as a blast from the past, threatening to ruin her queen bee reputation. Travis Henley may have grown up, but he still likes to play childish games and as payment for retrieving Jess’ lost ring from the bottom of a jungle pool, he wants three dates. While Jess does battle with spiders, snakes, wildfires and smart mean girls, she desperately tries to hang on to the last vestiges of her popular existence like the Golden Frog from its webbed toe. But as she starts to care about something more than tanning and texting – a species on the verge of disappearing forever – she may realize the worth of her inner nerd, and the one frog in particular that could be her prince in disguise.

Set in the lush and tropical El Valle de Anton, this modern fairytale re-imagining of “The Frog Prince” is toe-curling contemporary romance with an environmentalist heartbeat, in the tradition of Stephanie Perkins.

Excerpt
I slam the classroom door behind me. It bangs louder than expected and I dart a guilty look over my shoulder. The door stays shut as the reverberations echo down the hallway, empty except for a gorgeous guy in a tight white shirt leaning against a row of banged-up blue lockers, looking like he just stepped out of a Hollister ad. My heart, still hammering from the conversation I just had with Mr. A., thumps even harder. I still can’t believe that the most popular guy in school is waiting for me. Apparently he can’t believe it either, because an annoyed expression crosses his face as he looks up from his phone.
“What did Mr. A. want?” he asks, jamming his cell in the pocket of his Sevens.
I drop my bag and with shaking hands attempt to open my lock. I’m having trouble remembering the combination.
“I’m failing bio,” I say, finally yanking the lock down after several tries. The statement sounds absurd to my ears.
“So?” Miles asks.
“So Miami is out,” I whisper, one hand going to my mouth as if to keep the words from escaping.
“What?” His cobalt eyes take on a sharp quality, matching his voice. “What did he say?”
“He wants me to go with the stupid conservation club down to Panama to help some endangered frogs or something.” I’m not too sure of the details, having been knocked on my ass about my grade. I toss battered text books in my locker, and rest my forehead against the back of my hand, breathing in formaldehyde and failure.
“Did you tell him you can’t go?”
Lifting my head, I look at him. “Tried, but he said if I wanted any chance at passing, I have to do a report for extra credit and make up all the missed lab time.” Unfortunately Miles’s free period coincides with biology, which means I don’t always make it to class.
“Everything’s booked and paid for Jess,” he says slowly, like I’m two years old. “The flights, the condo on South Beach.” He cocks an eyebrow full of innuendo. “It’s our last spring break before we graduate.”
“I know, I know.” My stomach churns. “It’s just that if I don’t get my grade up then Berkeley’s totally off the table…” I examine my reflection in the locker mirror. Blue eyes bulge in a face tinged with green. I look like one of those frogs Mr. A. was yammering on about.
“I thought you didn’t want to go to Berkeley anymore.” Miles says. I turn to him and he tucks a piece of pale blond hair behind my ear. “I thought you wanted to stay home with me.”
I hesitate, unsure and unwilling to explain that before we met I was an entirely different person. Someone for whom Berkeley had once been the ultimate prize. Someone Miles wouldn’t have looked twice at.
“It’s just that my dad will freak when he finds out,” I finally say. That’s an understatement. I have no idea how I’m going to break the news to my father that his princess, former straight A, all-state spelling bee champ who’d skipped a year, is now failing grade twelve Biology. I’m having trouble wrapping my own head around it and I know about the missed assignments. “He’ll make me go when he hears.”
Miles shrugs, his fingers sweeping hair the exact shade as mine to the side. We have the same stylist. Lorenzo’s been a bit heavy-handed with the platinum lately. “Shitty,” he says. Surprised, I inspect his perfect face. The incensed outrage I’m expecting on my behalf, or at the very least, at the interference with his plans, doesn’t materialize. “Maybe this is a good thing,” he says instead, shifting his bag on his shoulder.
“What?” I blink at him.
“Maybe we could use a break.” His statement hits me in the face like a bucket of icy water.
“Are you serious?” I splutter.
“Yeah, you’ll be in Panama, I’ll be in South Beach—we might as well both have fun.”
“Are you saying you want to hook up with other people?” My voice takes on a high-pitched frequency. I’m surprised all the dogs in the neighbourhood don’t come running.
He looks down at his Converses, then back up. “That’s not what I’m saying.”
But it is. It’s exactly what he’s saying.
“Miles, can we talk about this?” I struggle to bring the hysteria down a notch as pieces of my new life, the life I’ve fought so hard for, crumble around me.
“It’s really not such a big deal, Jess.”
My mouth opens and closes like a goldfish.
“All I’m saying is, it’s just for a week or so, right, babe?” He follows up with a sexy smile. Scratch that—an arrogant smile.
Don’t do it, Jess. Don’t.
“And all I’m saying is, you’re just an asshole.” I shut my locker with such savagery it pops back open, narrowly missing my face.

Three sexy novellas about risking it all for a chance at love and passion . . .

JUST ONE NIGHT
Jason Hart has just one night to prove to his best friend's older sister that anything is possible . . .
Nicole de Salvo has been in love – and lust – for her little brother’s best friend for years. For years she’s watched from afar and done nothing about her attraction for Jason Hart only now their time together is almost at an end. On their last night together will she find the courage to do something about her feelings, or will she live with regret for the rest of her life?

ONE SPECIAL NIGHT
It's been nearly six months since Tommy de Salvo’s fiancée cheated and left him in the midst of wedding preparations because up-and-coming businessman Tommy was all work and no play. The last thing Tommy wants or needs is to be attracted to another woman who won’t be around for too long. A woman just like Navy Corpsman Jasmine Reyes. She’s rough, tough, and determined to go it alone, but Tommy knows that if he passes up this opportunity, he may regret it more than the loss of his fiancée . . .
Jasmine “Doc” Reyes is both emotionally and physically scarred after her tour of duty. Wounded in battle, all she can think about is rebuilding her life and continuing with the career that she’s dreamed about since she was a young child. She has no time for rich sexy men who’ve never had a care in the world and wouldn’t understand her determination. But Tommy’s charm is seductive and she knows that she has to explore the attraction, even if it’s only for this one special night.

ONE LAST NIGHT
It's been over a year since Marine Lieutenant Trevor Mason and his father have spoken. After nearly losing his life during a Taliban attack in Afghanistan, Trevor wants to end the rift between them so he can return to active duty with some peace of mind. But a visit to his father’s office only serves to show Trevor that his father isn’t as eager to reunite. If not for the intervention of Samuel Mason’s spunky and very sexy intern, Trevor would probably be returning to Afghanistan with his one wish unfulfilled.
Trevor Mason had used to do all kinds of things to Maggie Sullivan’s insides when she worked at the country club his family used to attend. Five years later, there is little left of the teen she knew in the stoic Marine who only wants some time with his father. When Trevor’s father backs out of his son’s dinner invitation at the last minute, Maggie does the only thing she can: she goes to Trevor’s apartment to deliver the news, but she can’t leave him alone on his one last night before returning to duty.
Thrown together, Trevor and Maggie can’t ignore the sexual heat between them. As they satisfy one set of needs, another slowly develops as passion breathes life into other emotions. Will Trevor and Maggie’s one last night together possibly lead to many other nights in the future?

EXCERPT

"What's up, Jase?  Why did you almost drag me out of the party?" she asked and leaned against one of the thick pilings for the boardwalk.

He braced his forearm just above her head on the support and shifted until her warm breath spilled against his face.  She smelled of something flowery and of Nicole and he inhaled deeply to memorize that aroma.

With his free hand, he brushed away a windblown lock of her hair and then skimmed his fingers down her smooth cheek.  She trembled beneath his touch and he hardened as he imagined how smooth the rest of her skin would be and how she would shiver against him while they made love.

"I want you, Nickie."

Her eyes widened in surprise and the words rushed from her.  "Hell no.  I don't believe you."

"Believe it, Nickie.  I've wanted you for a long time," he said and moved ever closer until his body was pressed to hers.

At that touch, she sucked in a shaky breath and closed her eyes.  In a husky voice she said, "Don't play with me, Jase."

He chuckled and her eyes snapped open to meet his gaze.  "Babe, I am so not playing with you.  At least not yet," he said and dropped his hand to trace the rounded swells of her breasts visible above the bodice of her killer dress.  It was the kind of dress that invited him to touch and to see.

Release Day Blitz/#Giveaway : Flury: Journey of a Snowman by Tony Bertauski

We're celebrating the RELEASE of
Flury: Journey of a Snowman
By Tony Bertauski

An Introduction to Flury

     Frosty had a magic hat.

There was no explanation, just a special hat that turned a pile of snow into a walking, talking best friend. Flury is more than that. And doesn’t smoke.

Born on the North Pole, Flury was created by an ancient race of elven that evolved during the Ice Age and continues to live in the polar ice today. Technologically advanced, they sustain themselves with innovation and wisdom. But even the most peaceful settlements encounter danger, such as polar bears. That’s why they invented abominables.

     What we call snowmen.

The life of an abominable doesn’t magically spring from a top hat. The heart of an abominable is a metal orb—an intricately carved sphere that generates an electromagnetic field and builds a body of snow around it. Abominables are intimidating and selfless. They run, they fly. Above all else, they protect.

In the late 1800s, Malcolm Toye was part of an arctic voyage that ended in disaster. The survivors of the expedition never saw him again. Malcolm had wandered into the snowy landscape to be saved by a patrolling abominable he would come to know as Flury.

His rescue, however, became more of a curse than a blessing when the elven refused to allow him safe passage back home, insisting they remain secret from humanity. Malcolm was destined to live out his days among the elven, pining for home.

     Longing for his wife.

Malcolm escaped by stealing the metal orb of Flury. Quietly, he arrived back in the United States to settle down and resume a normal life. But there was nothing normal about it. As the years went by, his estate becomes shrouded in mystery and rumors.

A hundred years will go by before the mystery is solved.

Oliver Toye, a teenage type 1 diabetic, will discover the magic hidden on his grandmother’s property. He’ll read about Malcolm Toye’s journey when he finds a set of leather bound journals. He’ll see the snowman trapped on the property, and the other things that haunt the forest. Most importantly, he’ll uncover Malcolm Toye’s master plan to harm others. And why he wants to.

Flury will come to Oliver’s rescue more than once.

Flury: Journey of a SnowmanFlury: Journey of a Snowman
(Claus #3)

by Tony Bertauski
YA Sci-Fi, Fantasy, Holiday

Life hasn’t been kind to Oliver Toye.

As if juvenile diabetes isn’t enough, he’s forced to live with his tyrannical grandmother in a snow-bound house. He spends his days doing chores and the nights listening to the forest rumble.

But when he discovers the first leather-bound journal, the family secrets begin to surface. The mystery of his great-grandfather’s voyage to the North Pole is revealed. That’s when the snowman appears.

Magical and mysterious, the snowman will save Oliver more than once. But when the time comes for Oliver to discover the truth, will he have the courage? When Flury needs him, will he have the strength? When believing isn’t enough, will he save the snowman from melting away?

Because sometimes even magic needs a little help.

About Tony Bertauski

During the day, I'm a horticulturist. While I've spent much of my career designing landscapes or diagnosing dying plants, I've always been a storyteller. My writing career began with magazine columns, landscape design textbooks, and a gardening column at the Post and Courier (Charleston, SC). However, I've always fancied fiction.

My grandpa never graduated high school. He retired from a steel mill in the mid-70s. He was uneducated, but he was a voracious reader. I remember going through his bookshelves of paperback sci-fi novels, smelling musty old paper, pulling Piers Anthony and Isaac Asimov off shelf and promising to bring them back. I was fascinated by robots that could think and act like people. What happened when they died?

I'm a cynical reader. I demand the writer sweep me into his/her story and carry me to the end. I'd rather sail a boat than climb a mountain. That's the sort of stuff I want to write, not the assigned reading we got in school. I want to create stories that kept you up late.

Having a story unfold inside your head is an experience different than reading. You connect with characters in a deeper, more meaningful way. You feel them, empathize with them, cheer for them and even mourn. The challenge is to get the reader to experience the same thing, even if it's only a fraction of what the writer feels. Not so easy.

In 2008, I won the South Carolina Fiction Open with Four Letter Words, a short story inspired by my grandfather and Alzheimer's Disease. My first step as a novelist began when I developed a story to encourage my young son to read. This story became The Socket Greeny Saga. Socket tapped into my lifetime fascination with consciousness and identity, but this character does it from a young adult's struggle with his place in the world.

After Socket, I thought I was done with fiction. But then the ideas kept coming, and I kept writing. Most of my work investigates the human condition and the meaning of life, but not in ordinary fashion. About half of my work is Young Adult (Socket Greeny, Claus, Foreverland) because it speaks to that age of indecision and the struggle with identity. But I like to venture into adult fiction (Halfskin, Drayton) so I can cuss. Either way, I like to be entertaining.

And I'm a big fan of plot twists.

Life is good for LOGAN MIDDLETON.
He’s quarterback of the Shepherd High football team, nephew of the town’s most
successful lawyer, and boyfriend of Jenna Maples, a girl who has finally agreed
to take their relationship to the next level. But nothing good lasts forever.

With only a few minutes of last period English left between him and a weekend
alone with Jenna, Logan blacks out. When he awakens, he finds himself in a
future where Shepherd High lies in ruins, nothing is what it seems, and
everyone he loves is dead. Logan is a shifter. Chosen to travel through time,
it’s up to him to figure out how to stop the terrible events that claimed his
once perfect life.

Of course, all of this might be easier if he wasn’t paired with the one girl
who’d rather see him dead than help him, JOSEPHINE. A girl he tormented during
childhood. Strong-willed with biting wit, who lives in the shadows. Tough and
dark, Jo is Shepherd High’s most notorious outcast and Logan’s opposite in
every way. Together the two must overcome their many differences to figure out
why they’ve been selected for such an overwhelming task, and who selected them
in the first place.

Before it’s too late…
Excerpt
“Hey. Where you at?” Jenna asked, tapping me on the chin. I had wasted time I could be spending with her thinking on all the crappiness of the day. I wouldn’t make that mistake again. I needed to live in my present.
I placed my hand against her smooth, flushed cheek. “I’m right here,” I whispered. I was where I wished I could be forever.
Jenna rocked forward so she was up on her knees. She bit on her lip. “You gonna make me do all the work here?”
I couldn’t help but grin. “I don’t want anyone to say I’m controlling. Though I do have to comment on our lack of creativity. We have the whole house to ourselves. We could do this on the couch, or on top of the dinning room table...”
Jenna covered my mouth with her hand. “On the table that came with my great-grandmother from Germany?”
I laughed. “You’re right. Don’t want to get too crazy.”
There was something comforting about being with a girl who knew you. I know by most of my friends’ standards losing my virginity at seventeen was considered pathetic. I was QB1, and my so very supportive friends often reminded me that I could easily have lost the v-card anytime I wanted to lose it. But I had wanted it to be with Jenna. The whole idea of sex while alluring, and damn was it alluring, was kinda scary. There was no way I would be good at it at first. That wasn’t possible. I liked the fact we stumbled through it together. We were probably both bad, but with each other it felt good. Really good. I didn’t worry about making a mistake. I just wanted to be with her, and she wanted to be with me.
“I love you,” I said.
“I love you too.”
We always said this beforehand. Not because we had to say it, but because this was an act of utter trust. I couldn’t imagine doing it any other way. Sure, down the road maybe my thought process would change, but I only had the present.
I pressed my lips against Jenna’s, and I felt her lean into me. I shifted down so my head was against the pillow, pulling Jenna fully on top of me. I ran my hands up her back. Jenna pulled away. “I love you,” she said again. As always, her face flashed fear. This fear only lasted a moment, but it was always there. I never quite understood it. Maybe this meant something different to girls.

The Shadow Soul (A Dance of Dragons, #1)
Release Date: 02/20/14

Release Date:
GAME OF THRONES meets GRACELING in a new fantasy series by bestselling author Kaitlyn Davis.

Jinji has been haunted by the death of her twin brother for ten years. Now, on the dawn of her joining, the nightmare that claimed him has returned for her.

Prince Whylrhen is determined to prevent the past from repeating itself. His kingdom is expecting a new heir, and he will stop at nothing to keep the child safe.

Though they've never met, the two share a deep secret—magic. Jinji can weave the elements to create master illusions and Whylrhen can pull burning flames into his flesh. But neither of them knows what they are truly capable of until a chance encounter brings them together. For their story has played out before, in a long forgotten time—an age of myth that is about to be reborn…

The Spirit Heir – Chapter Two  The same moment but this time from Rhen's perspective! He has just awakened from a three week coma caused by a knife wound to the gut, and immediately ordered Jinji be released from the dungeons. Now he tries to gather his strength as he sees her for the first time as a woman, and not as the boy she was pretending to be in The Shadow Soul.

So Rhen stood, immediately stumbling, grasping for the chair to keep himself upright. A shooting pain ran down his side, from his wound to the very tip of the toes on his left leg. His body could barely hold his weight, weak from so many days spent still.
Gritting his teeth, he stepped forward, grunting. His body was ablaze, but he pushed on, shuffling as best he could to cross the space that had seemed small, but now felt like an ocean.
Half falling against the wall, Rhen steadied himself, taking deep breaths, gulping them in before he dared open the door.
I'm a mess. He sighed. Weak was not something Rhen's body was used to. Muscles sore from a day spent in the practice yards, yes. But this? This feeling like he reached in vain for strength, this emptiness—this was new. And he did not like it.
But it would not stop him.
So Rhen stood, biting his inner lip until it almost bled to distract his mind from the pain in his torso, and steadied himself before opening the door before him.
There she was.
Smaller than he remembered, but still strong, still defiant.
His heart clenched, tightening, the longer he took her in. Skinny legs and even skinnier arms, eaten away by lack of food, covered in dirt and dust, stained with sweat yet ridged with goose bumps. Torn clothes hung like rags. And her wrists. Rhen could not stop his eyes from widening in horror, his breath from sucking in sharply.
Ghastly cuts shredded her lower arms, caked over with blood that dried only to run fresh and dry again. Layers that looked dark, while others looked like the color of the royal family, bright and fresh. Jin looked like an unnamed Ourthuri, fresh from having her tattoos removed, skin and all, with no regard for human life.
Tearing his eyes away, Rhen's gaze traveled further. An apology tightened his thoughts, but there were no words he could even think to say.
And then he met her eyes.
Warm, like he remembered. Brown but glowing bright, golden highlights reflecting the sun.
Knowing she was a woman had shifted something. Rhen felt it stir, the sense of change, a desire sprouting to life in his veins. Strong, but new and uncertain. Even at her worst, covered in grime, she looked beautiful to him. All because of those eyes, staring at him like he was a dream, a god come to life, the spirits themselves. Eyes that had spent hours in his dreams when he thought her a princess of Ourthuro, suddenly more powerful now that they belonged to someone he knew, someone he trusted, someone he called a friend.
She bit her lip, and Rhen was pulled from his mind. That move, it was one he had seen Jin do a hundred times. Jin the boy, the unsure lad he had come to think of as a brother.
Against his will, Rhen retreated. The lies flooded his thoughts. The mistruths. The times he had opened himself up like a fool to someone who had only been playing him. Like a poison, it washed the warmth from his body, filling his blood with pain.
She took a step forward.
He could not move a muscle, not closer, not farther away. Stuck.
She halted before him, barely a hand's length away from his body, so small, but not delicate. Not fragile. Stronger than him somehow.
Her hand rose, slowly, so Rhen had time to step away if he wanted to. But he didn’t. He couldn’t.
Jin's palm came to stop on his cheek, warm and reassuring. Her eyes were hesitant, gazing at him like he might disappear, like he was not real.
On instinct, Rhen's hand followed, holding hers in place as though she too might disappear. He felt his resolve soften the longer he met her stare. He had seen his friend, this friend, in pain too many times. It had become second nature to want to ease her hurt. Boy or girl, in that moment it hardly mattered—he would do what was needed to erase the ever-present haunt in her gaze.
"You're alive?" she asked, awed.
Rhen smirked, feeling his lip rise on its own, as he spoke the truth to the one person he had always been able to speak the truth to. "Barely."
And with that, his body rebelled, giving out and slipping toward the floor.
As usual, Jin caught him, saved him.
But Rhen felt her arms wobble, her body shake. And before he knew it, they were both on the ground, a mass of arms and legs. Two pairs of pain-filled groans echoed across the sitting room, bouncing around the empty walls, until finally Rhen had no choice but to laugh.
"We make a sorry pair." Rhen sighed, using his elbow as an anchor against the ground to hold his chest up.
He looked over to find Jin smiling. Silent, but still smiling.

When her mother remarried and moved them
to a town where a date meant hanging out at the Sonic, Laney figured that
"boring" would have a whole new meaning. A new stepsister who
despised her and a high school where she was the only topic of gossip were bad enough.
But when she met the school counselor (and his terminal bad breath), she grew
suspicious. Especially since he had wings that only she could see. And then
there were Josh and Mason, two gorgeous glimmering-eyed classmates whose
interest in her might not be for the reasons she hoped. Not to mention that
dead guy she nearly tripped over in gym class.

Boring takes on an entirely new dimension in Fairy, Texas.

If she's going to survive in this small
town, she'll have to learn to wing it.
Excerpt:

Fairy High could have fit into one wing of my old school. The three-story, red brick building looked like it had been around for at least a century—it actually had carvings over two of the doorways that read “Men’s Entrance” and “Women’s Entrance.” I was glad to see that none of the kids paid any attention to those instructions.
“Counselor’s office,” I muttered to myself. At least I wasn’t starting in the middle of a term—though given the fact that there were fewer than 500 students in the entire high school, I didn’t think I was going to be able to go unnoticed, even in the general bustle of the first day back from summer vacation.
I walked through the door marked “Men’s Entrance,” just be contrary, and faced a long hallway lined with heavy wooden doors. The spaces in between the doors were filled with lockers and marble staircases with ornate hand-rails flanked each end of the long hallway. Students poured in behind me, calling out greetings to each other and jostling me off to the side while I tried to get my bearings. None of the doors obviously led to a main office; I was going to have to walk the entire length of the hallway. And people were already starting to stare and whisper.
God. I hated being the new kid.

Book Blitz/#giveaway : Gauge by Cara Nelson

Gauge
Release Date: November 2014
New Adult/ 17+

Summary fron Goodreads:

Gauge Bronson has a simple rule:
never mix business with pleasure. As the lead singer and guitarist of
Provocative, he has his fair share of girls throwing themselves at him, but he
refuses to get involved with clingy groupies or women he works with. When
beautiful, beguiling Brynn joins the tour, though, he can’t deny there’s
something about her he finds irresistible. It’s been a long time since a woman
didn’t fawn over him. He’ll have to keep his appetite in check and keep her at
a distance if he’s going to remember that she’s off limits.

Aspiring journalist Brynn Morgan has been given the chance of a lifetime to
interview a rock band for a new magazine and launch her career. When she learns
her assignment is the band Provocative, whose music she’s never liked, any
disappointment is overshadowed by her excitement and determination to write a
killer story. Plus, the fact that she’s not a fan will make it that much easier
to keep things professional. One look at Gauge, though, and she feels an
instant attraction to the cocky, tattooed rocker. But despite the sparks flying
between them, she’s got a job to do.

As Brynn heads out on a world tour with the band and tries to get them to spill
their secrets, the sizzling chemistry between her and Gauge becomes harder and
harder to ignore…
