Author Interview: One Plus One by Kay Dee Royal

Little Blurb about yourself: Hello Sue, thank you so much for having me today at Books, Books, the Magical Fruit (excellent blog name btw). Hello everyone…hope your holidays have been warm and wonderful ;) AND, humanity made it gracefully into 2013

Here’s a bit about me – I write paranormal, fantasy, and contemporary erotic romance. The more I write the more I uncover an element of the shock factor in my stories…usually of the sizzling hot kind. Not sure where it comes from, but maybe this nerd, shy girl inside me, the one scratching to get out, is ready to shift OR fly.*LOL* Besides writing erotica romance, I edit, and also write YA under another name…the change-ups from one to another seem good for my soul :)

1. Who or what inspired you to become a writer?

All of the amazing books I read as a child, magazines, television, movies, my high school English teacher, journaling, life events, and because I grew up loving a pen in my hand scrolling across a sheet of paper.

2. How long did it take you to write One Plus One?

This story took only a couple of months.

3. While writing how many times do you go back and rewrite a plot?

With One Plus One I don’t recall making any big changes, only a few rewrites for a couple scenes due to story-star responses/reactions to make it stronger.

BUT, the WIP right now (Savage Smoke – LIIA Series Book 2) has been a bit of a nightmare – I’ve made at least three pretty major changes that have involved the plot in some way…which meant I had to go back to the beginning and make sure each change flowed throughout the story as it should. I’m in the middle of another major change. Hopefully, by the time it gets to the editors there won’t be much to change. *crossing fingers*

4. You run into a bookstore, where do you go first?

I’m a paper geek – I usually run to see if B&N still has my favorite spiral hard covered notebook. I pick up at least one each time I visit. Then, I see what’s new in the writer resource book area. AND, yes, I always check out the romances.

5. How many books in a month do you tend to read?

If it’s a long book, it will take me sometimes a month or more to read because I’m busy like all authors writing their next books and don’t have a lot of time left over for reading. I am usually reading a number of books at the same time ~ my mood dictates which book I pick up when I do have time ;) The length of time it takes me to read a book is usually no reflection on the book itself – it’s simply a time thing with me. So, in answer to your question – I honestly don’t know because it varies. *I know, this seems like a long exposition for no good answer…sorry*

6. In all the books you've read. Who is your most favorite character and why?

When I was very young, I read a Kathleen E. Woodiwiss historical romance, The Flame and the Flower, and the hero was Captain Brandon Birmingham. I’ve never forgotten him. I wonder if I went back and read it again, if it would have the same impact on me – heroes like Brandon make a romance novel worthy of reading ;)

7. State 5 random facts about yourself.

-I grew up fishing – and still love it.
-I used to be a dog woman, now I’m more of a cat woman
-My grandchildren can pull me out of a funk faster than anyone else in my life
-My hubby and I process and freeze venison and smoke jerky, summer sausage, chickens, and briskets (learning new things)
-I always love a campfire

8. Your favorite Genre?

Paranormal erotic romance – although I’ve been expanding my reading genres and am finding some real gems – like Steampunk erotic romance

9. What are you currently reading?

The Powers by S. Durham – it’s a paranormal suspense romance with a number of twists and turns – what a creative imagination she has ;)

10. What is the best book you've read?

I’ve read many that have impacted me for different reasons, like Maggie Stiefvater’s, Shiver (a YA paranormal with excellent realism in her characters); Jodi Picolt’s, My Sister’s Keeper (contemporary YA fiction, with an amazing plot and deep relationship emotions within her characters); And, anything by Kate Douglas – I love her world building and her paranormal heroes and heroines.

11. Any new projects coming up?
I’m working on the 2nd book in my Lycan International Investigation Agency (LIIA) series – Savage Smoke (by the time this airs, it should be submitted) and I’m also polishing up two YA novels written under another name.

Here’s your chance to market your book. Describe it. And why readers should pick it up?

Lacinda’s in her mid-twenties and runs an animal shelter. She lost her husband-to-be two years prior and has more or less closed herself off from everything outside her animal sanctuary. After a few glasses of wine her best friend talks Lacinda into filling out a sensually explicit survey questionnaire as a dare. It ends up the survey is a contest entry for a three-week singles cruise.
Then there’s Blade…oh, so yummy:) He’s too rich for his own good and is tired of too many possible relationships being more about his money. He’s done with women, only his female business partner and long-time friend, Mazie, has something to say about that. She pulls together a singles cruise with the idea she’s going to find Blade a mate for life.
This book was so fun to write, sparks flew between Lacinda and Blade from the get-go…love when that happens ;)
